Network Design for Real Traffic Models of the Internet

The design and optimization of a communication network is a complex task, because it involves a lot of factors. When studying the network design for real traffic models of the Internet, there are two important factors: the network cost and the communications delay. We tackle this NP-hard multiobjective optimization problem using two metaheuristics not used before in this domain: NSGA-II and SPEA-II.

In order to facilitate the programming tasks, we have used the PISA framework. The experimental tasks require a lot of computing efforts, with massive data processing. For this reason, we also work in a novel PISA parallelization based on Message Passing Interface (MPI) that allows distributing work load between computer cluster nodes, increasing thus the productivity.
